If you have not read or hear about it all over the news, North Korea has launched a few missles today.  The South Koreans are trying to shake it off and say that it’s just normal military drill for the North, but I don’t think that’s the case.  I believe that the South Korean are keeping a close eye on those crazy communists up there.  Some sources say that because America is concentrating too much on its elections that the ongoing nuclear talks will not achieve much in the near future.

It is my wiring

So, I tried what I did in my earlier post.  Please, do not do this at home and if you do, I will not take any responsibilities if anything goes wrong.  Anyway, I opened up the receptacle for my range then I went to my electrical panel to turn on the breaker.  With my girlfriend’s hair dryer in one hand and its plug in the other, I carefully touched the ends to the hot wire on the right and ground/neutral.  With the right hot wire, I was able to turn on the hair dryer and get it to work.

I read this story at TheStar today and I must say, talk about oppression by the Chinese government.  If you haven’t read, or don’t want to read the story, in short, the Chinese government sentenced Yang Chunlin to 5-years in jail for his petition letter, "We want human rights, not the Olympics."  I am feeling quite uneasy about this, I wouldn’t want the Olympics to be in China if this is the case.  I mean, I would want the people of my country to be well off first before I worry about international business.

Still cannot cook

I have spent so much time on this stupid thing and it is still not working.  Last week, I spent a few days trying to diagnose what the problem is, and I still don’t have a clue what is going on.  Although, I think I have narrowed it down to it being the electrical of the mobile home that I am living in.  I tried to get some help at doityourself.com, and still no luck yet.

My oven/range no longer working

It has been a while since I’ve cooked at my mobile home with my oven/range.  I went home to western Washington for Christmas break, and after coming back to my temporary home here in Moscow, my oven/range has been broken.  At first, I thought the problem was in the range itself.  I did all sorts of tests, continuity, power, test on the power switch…everything!  I cannot find anything wrong with it, but I thought that there must be some severe rust somewhere.  The oven was old anyway, so I decided to get a new one…well, a new old one is more like it.

Xubuntu is the first operating I chose to test out since my troubles with Vista.  Now that I’ve used it for a bit, I don’t think I would like it much.  Regardless of what I do, I need to have windows, and why is that?  I love to play RTS games.  My all time favorite game is of course, Warcraft 2.  I play it on the Russian server, and about once or twice a week.  I stopped playing it for a while, but I recently played it and I got hooked again.

Well, since I am trying out different operating systems now, I want to see if it is possible to do some gaming under Linux.  You can install Warcraft 2 under Linux using the latest Wine or Cedega (I opted for this and compiled from cvs).  Once I have everything compiled and configured properly with Cedega, I tried to run Warcraft 2 from Linux.  Immediately, I had a few problems.

My thoughts on Compiz Fusion

I know that for my experience, it was a slight pain to get compiz working.  On top of that is the Nvidia bug that makes compiz not work so well on my computer.  Overall, my experience with it has not been too good.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful when it’s working right.  I can see how some of these features can improve productivity by a lot since it gives you a grasp on "where" the desktop is.  I would expect the cube to be very productive when you get used to it.  Some people like scale, which is used with expose.  Some may even like the wobbly windows, but I cannot find how this can help you to be more productive.

Since my previous post about the horrors of Vista, I’ve been thinking a lot about compiz fusion and it got me rather interested in getting it to work on my laptop.  I wanted to step in to try and see how I like this thing, not knowing all the troubles that I will be facing as you’ll soon find out.  Since I wanted to try out Ubuntu, I had a choice to make between Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu.  As you can guess by now, I’ve chosen to stick with Xubuntu, why?

I’ve tried using Vista for slightly over two months now, and I keep on having issues with it.  At this point, I find that working with Vista has caused more headaches for me than XP, so I’ve decided to use something else.  My current problems with Vista and my Dell M1330 are many, but here are a couple of major ones.  If my computer goes to sleep, sometimes it will not wake up.  That is, the screen turns black and when pushing the power button, it remains black.  I’ve had to do a hard reset on this computer more times than necessary.
