Currently have a dell xps m1330, have had it for 5 months.

1. lightweight, portable, sexy, no doubt

2. I have the X3100 Intel GMA integrated graphics. I can run Counter Strike Source but not smoothly at all. Unenjoyable in fact. The X3100 is not good for gaming regardless of RAM (3gigs here). The Nvidia 8400 overheats so stay away from that too.

3. I have a 6 cell. Surfing the net with brightness at 3, i get 3 hours and 30 min. Turn off wi-fi, i get 4 hours and 30 min. Decreease brightness to 1 with no wi-fi, i can push out 5 hours and 30 min. (I have an LED-backlit display).

4. Love the slot load CD ROM

5. Bluetooth works well

6. Good build quality

7. Speakers not very loud, and def nearly non-existent bass

8. I have the remote but never really used it (never saw a need)

9. I've been getting BSOD'd due to corrupted SP1, have not gotten around to re-formatting

10. Plays movies very well with the true-life display and movie effect on Divx set to 5

Sam, my laptop is very quiet. The only thing that is loud with this thing is the optical drive. However, since I do not use the optical drive much, it doesn't really bother me. However, when you turn on the computer, the optical drive does make a really loud annoying sound. This can be solved by putting a dummy disc inside of the drive, so you'll only hear the spin-up noise as opposed to the drive trying to look for a disc.

The fan is not loud at all and if you're on battery saving mode, it's rarely on because of the lower processor clock.

In terms of heat, if you are not constantly doing dev or some sort of encoding, there should not be that much heat at all. Especially with the newer Penryn processors out, your laptop should be even cooler (temperature wise) and faster! Hope that helps :)

Chi,

You have a nice blog there. Hope to have you around more often. In terms of battery, I think it is great. With the non-integrated graphics on 6-cell battery and brightness second from lowest. The battery life is about 2:30 hours. Usually on battery, I use it for browsing the internet and email as well as research. Very little development, any development I do is with SSH to my linux box at home.

Overall, I think the battery life is very good. With the 9-cell battery, I get about 4:30 hours, not bad at all.

Gokhan,

Hey, I didn't see your comment earlier and didn't approve it in a timely fashion. I see your point, but I think you can call customer service and get them to replace whatever is wrong with your computer. With Dell, I usually keep at least 1-year at home, but I try to go for 2 years or 3 years. I think it is a good investment because laptops will usually fail in one way or another within a 3 year period.
