CAT | Rants

So, I have the dell E22FP along with my M1330. In the first few days/weeks, the monitor was working fine. Then, I noticed that it was flickering when viewed from a slight angle. At first, I thought this was a problem with the LCD. My first inclination was to complain to Dell. However, being that I am a lazy person, I never did that :) , but then I realized that when my M1330 plugs into other LCD monitors, the flicker also appears. When I try to boost the refresh rate up past 70Hz, the flickering disappears.

As stated by this news article published by this press release at University of California, Berkley. Researchers have found that the performance between girls and boys in math are now equal! The reason they believe this is the case is that girls take more math classes earlier in today’s society. This leads to no difference in the comprehension of math problems between girls and boys.

I found this research very misleading. The first 3/4 of the article talks about the changes in our school system or how "women took fewer advanced courses in mathematics than men" in previous decades. However, in a few paragraphs of this article, they did mention one thing that I find very important for the analysis of this research. (more…)

I have had the M1330 for a few months now and I must say, it is quite a fast computer!  I cannot ask for anymore in terms of speed, however, there are a few things about this laptop that bothers me.  You can see more of my laptop here. Of course, you can ignore me as I am very picky with my laptops :) .

Pizza Hut in Pullman, Washington

Welcome to another rant…

I am the event coordinator/public relations guy for the newly established ACM club here at WSU (Washington State University).  This coming Sunday March 2nd, we’ll have Mr. Charles Cox over to do a workshop on XNA.  Being the position that I am in, I needed to place some advance orders for pizzas for the event.  I stopped by their place at 4:50ish to order some pizzas for the coming Sunday at 11:25AM, after all the hassles of the employees not knowing how to do purchase orders, everything was "okay".  At 5:34PM, I received several phone calls from an unknown number.  Since I was in handbell choir (yes, you read that right) during the time, so I couldn’t pick up the phone.  At 6:00PM, I checked my voicemail and here’s the message that I received,

DHL Problems…again!

If you have kept up with this blog at all, you would know that I had several problems with my brand new laptop, the M1330.  Since then, I’ve contacted Dell and they’ve put in a replacement laptop for me using the next business day shipping.  So, DHL did a "Shipment Acknowledged" on Wednesday the 6th, but they didn’t pick up the package until Thursday the 7th.  So I thought in my mind, the laptop would arrive at my place on Friday the 8th hence the "Next Business Day" shipping.  Although I shouldn’t be surprised, but it is now February 11th, and I have no idea where my replacement laptop is! Does MS Windows Suck?

Before I get into my rant, let me tell you what my background is.  I have used Windows since 3.11 for Workgroups.  After 3.11, I went to 95, then to XP.  I skipped 98, ME, and 2000, but they are similar enough to XP and 95 that I don’t think I missed much.

On the Linux side, I started with Mandrake, then Fedora Core, then Slackware.  Since my preferred flavor of linux is Slack, I used it for about 2 years on my laptop computer.  Since then, I have also been managing a Centos and a Debian server. (more…)

My M1330 in DHL’s hands

So, my M1330 was "shipped" on the 23rd of this month.  I put shipped in quotes because it says "Shipment Acknowledged" on DHL’s website for 2 days.  unexpectedly, on Friday the 25th, I got 5 notifications from DHL, since I signed up for email notification, saying that my package was In Transit, Processed, Depart, and a whole host of other status changes, all within a 4 hour period.  Talk about tracking eh?  Nothing was updated on their system for 2 days, and then it all gets updated all at once.  This was another WTF moment!
