Dell M1330 Usage Experience

I have had the M1330 for a few months now and I must say, it is quite a fast computer!  I cannot ask for anymore in terms of speed, however, there are a few things about this laptop that bothers me.  You can see more of my laptop here. Of course, you can ignore me as I am very picky with my laptops :) .

The first and most obvious thing that I find annoying is the loud noise that is made by the slot load dvd drive. I cannot imagine using this drive in a quiet room like the classroom or the library. I’ve had it that when I load my CD, people from the next table looked at me with odd facial expressions. If only WD40 can fix this, I’d fix it in a heartbeat.

The next thing I find annoying is that the keyboard sits a bit high. Since they designed this laptop to be slim, there are no rubber feet on the LED/LCD screen that came with this laptop. The result? There’s an imprint of the keyboard on the monitor after a few months of usage. I have taken care not to let this happen by keeping the original padding that they put between the keyboard and the screen. Without this, I am bound to have lines on my monitor now.

The capacitance touch buttons at the top are a great idea, however, I cannot see it in the dark! Many times I find myself watching a movie and having a hard time finding the right button to touch. They all feel the same. Besides the usability issue in the dark, it is also hard to control the volume with this button. I suppose I can tap on it, but sometimes tapping does not register. Great idea, but maybe the technology isn’t quite there yet.

This laptop is also pretty wobbly. With or without the battery in, there’s a slight wobble that is quite noticeable if you’re typing on the keyboard. This really bothers me, but I’ve learned to place a folded piece of paper underneath the loose corner to prevent it from wobbling as I type.

Other than these problems, I really cannot find any other issues with the laptop. If knowing what I know now about the laptop, I would still buy it for the speed and price.
