Chinese and freedom of speech
I read this story at TheStar today and I must say, talk about oppression by the Chinese government. If you haven't read, or don't want to read the story, in short, the Chinese government sentenced Yang Chunlin to 5-years in jail for his petition letter, "We want human rights, not the Olympics." I am feeling quite uneasy about this, I wouldn't want the Olympics to be in China if this is the case. I mean, I would want the people of my country to be well off first before I worry about international business.
Of course, one can argue that the Olympics will be beneficial to China by bringing revenue to this part of China. I would venture to say that people who will be profiting from this the most are in some way connected to the Chinese govenrment. Would the people benefit much from this Olympic event? I too, am from a communist country, and I hope that one day all of the people from these countries not have to worry about food and shelter. Let us see if the UN will do anything about this, but I have a feeling that they will not do anything.
